Day 6 (2nd August 2025)

Immediately after we left the three brothers, we found ourselves at another kill site.  Two lionesses had also killed a wildebeest and again we must have just missed the kill as the lions were taking a rest before they tucked in.

We think they might have been might slightly younger females as the were looking around quite a lot as if hoping for their mother to arrive and praise them for a successful catch.  They seemed quite tentative to start eating the kill, perhaps waiting for the pride to join them and seemed more interested in play fighting.  Eventually they tucked in and started to tear into the belly of the wildebeest.  They were far quicker to make progress compared to the cheetahs which makes sense as they are much bigger animal with a bigger jaw.

We stayed for about 20 minutes and then decided to check on the area we had seen the pride lazing around in earlier in the day.  The full pride was now out from hiding in the bushes  and we thinking there were about 12 of them including 1 very young looking cub and a few juveniles.  Interestingly after about 10 minutes, many of the lions started yawning, opening their jaws widely.

Our guide told us this was an indication they were about to start moving.  We decided to move our vehicle a little ways up the road to where the chief lioness of the pride was sitting alone and she started to roar, maybe about 10 times.  As soon as she was finished the pride appeared on the dirt track making their way towards her, ignoring the vehicles that were in their way, and getting ready to head out for the evening looking for a tasty dinner.
